Name-Changing Fanatic

If you haven't noticed by now, my blog is suffering from a massive identity crisis.  I am pretty sure I have changed my blog's title more often than I have dusted my house.  I was trying to brainstorm all of the different names this blog has displayed, and here are the ones I can remember, from oldest to most recent:
  • My Ramblings
  • Iridescent Bubbles
  • Fizzyjo (still my URL, and probably always will be)
  • Quarter after One
  • Trying to Fit the Ocean in a Cup (as of just now)
I'm pretty sure I also had "Mindless Meanderings" in there somewhere, and one or two other names I am presently forgetting.

But I will say that I love this new name, and I am really, truly convinced that this title will actually stick around for awhile (hey now, quit scoffing!  It could happen!).  I wish I could take credit for it, but I was actually inspired by the cover label for a CD...one that I have never once listened to, or even heard of, until about twelve minutes ago.  The CD is from a Christian artist, Josh Wilson, and having never listened to his music, it honestly could royally suck (although I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume it's   awesome).  Either way, I still love that invented idiom.  Not the royally-sucking one, but the ocean/cup one.  Outside of its powerful spiritual implications, it's a playful reminder to me of people in life trying to accomplish the seemingly impossible.

From the blogging standpoint, the expression simply makes me think of how us bloggers try to squeeze our entire lives into these tiny snapshots.  In fact, a friend and fellow blogger recently stated, "Chances are, things will be forgotten because there’s no way I can recount so much in so little space" (Kristyn @ Pretty Pessimist).  I think we can all relate.  There is no blog or journal in the world that can accurately capture a person's entire story anymore than a photograph can capture a person's entire memory.  Trying to reflect one's self through these little written glimpses is like "trying to fit the ocean in a cup."  It's a practically ridiculous endeavor.  Yet, for a few of us, there seems to be something inherently worthwhile in this perpetual obsession with scooping up all of this salt water, trying to create one little ripple of purpose.

  1. Identity. Man's primary source of connection, the blood of so many works of literature, and yet we spend our lives trying to find it, that is to say 'who am I?'

Who knows, in 500 years some kid in art history will be making flash cards trying to remember my name and that I lived in california, and then he'll be off to American Lit of the 21st century and just can't remember if it was the twin who's work kept changing titles.

  2. Existentialism. I would elaborate, but I have to write a 10 page paper on the flippin' topic tomorrow.

I love the new title Jodi!

  3. I had to look up "existentialism" Shan because I had no idea what that was...it's really annoying that you keep getting smarter than me. LOL

Ryan, I'm laughing so hard at your last sentence! But hey, at least MY work has titles (even though it seems to be suffering with multiple-personality disorder). The poor kids 500 years from now are going to be scratching their heads at your work, asking "Why the hell didn't he title some of this stuff?" ;-)

  4. Jojo, no matter how much education I have, I will always be a dumbass...I just can't seem to help myself! And you will always be the better writer. :)

  5. I love the new name but if a bikini is required I'll just fill a cup of sand. I laughed so hard that you've changed the title more than you've dusted. We must have graduated from the same cleaning school with the motto "dusting is only required when Mom comes to visit or there is a solar eclipse"

  6. Yeah, I graduated with honors from that same cleaning school, Melinda, although if I am remembering the midterms correctly, I think blue moons might also warrant some light dusting.

Jewls, not true--you have what I am severely lacking, which is common sense and street smarts. Plus let's not forget all of the knowledge you've gained from being in the navy! I might be able to write (thank you for that compliment, by the way!), but my head is so far up in the clouds that it's a miracle I don't get hit by a car while crossing the street. Sometime in the next couple of weeks I plan to write a list of the ten stupidest things I have ever done and post it on my blog, so stay tuned for that--it'll make you feel MUCH smarter. ;-)

  7. Jojo,
I am laughing my ass off, because that comment was from ME..."Awesomeness"....sorry if I confused you! Hehe!!

  8. LOL! I scanned right over that, reading it as "Anonymous."

Well I would reassure you that you're not a "dumb ass," but I already used up all of my nice warm thoughts on Jewls. Sorry. ;-)

  9. How did I miss this?! I don't think I've ever been quoted before, but thanks Jodi!! I really like the new name, Jodi, but I've liked all of the others, too. With that in mind, I'm sure I'll like the next one as well. ;)

  10. Oh no..I gotta get blue moons added to my dusting schedule. I also dust when it causes me to sneeze like crazy or I see the kids have written something in it.
