Self-Imposed Challenges

Forcing myself to check in again.  Hello cyber world, I'm still alive.  :)  I have too much to talk about, so let me just ignore all that for now and tell you two things I'm excited about.

Item #1:  I am attempting to read the entire Bible, cover to cover, in 90 days.  I'll give more details about that in a future post.  As of now, I just completed Day 6.  It doesn't sound like much, but since each day requires about an hour of reading, that is six full hours in less than a week.  For me, this has been no easy feat.  I may be a Christian, but personally, the Bible has never been an easy read (and I officially think that 90% of the characters in Genesis ought to have been committed. Seriously, there's no doctor in the world that would be able to diagnose their breed of crazy).  Again, I will say more about all of this in a future entry...but I wanted to at least mention it right now, especially since I've had a meter on my blog keeping track of my progress for the last several days.

Item #2:  I started a novel.  I know, big whoop--everyone does.  But this one is different.  It's different because for once I have an appealing plotline that I feel incredibly confident about, but in addition to that, this story has direction.  I know exactly how the story is going to end and how all of the loose ends are going to be tied.  I've come up with vague concepts for novels in the past, but I could never figure out how the story was going to be resolved; I could never work out all of those little details, so such projects ultimately led to failure.  This time, I have the entire story mapped out.  Today, upon the advice of my supportive sis, I created an outline of all fifteen chapters, and the epilogue.  Clint has been indescribably helpful every step of the way.  He's been taking all of my muddled ideas and helping me to turn them into something tangible.  Every day he has brainstormed my characters with me and helped me to make them more rich with personality.  We talk casually about these characters as if they are real people, and he listens to all of my new ideas and chimes in with his feedback.  I have never in my life come this far with a story before, and I feel this child-like excitement bubbling inside of me.  I can't explain it.  It just feels different.  This is the one.  The one that's going to get published, or the one I'll die trying on.  Either way, it feels good to feel this passionate about something.

  4. Jodi, both goals are awesome!! Good luck on the bible reading. I'm with you, I've never found it an easy read. We studied Genesis and Job in one of my undergrad lit classes and it was pretty interesting.

Also, good luck with the novel. I understand how exciting it can be. I'm sure you'll get it done. Can't wait to see it one day!!

  5. This one is IT. I am so excited. I can't wait to have you autograph my copy. Hurry up and finish your Bible challenge so you can get this damn thing written (Egh, is that a sinful thing to write?)

  6. Wait-I take that back. Take your time with the Bible challenge. Pour your heart in it, learn lots of stuff, get in God's good graces...that way he will help you get your damn book published.

  7. Crying with laughter Sho!! Thank you, sweet sissy of mine. I'm sure God appreciates your heart-felt sentiments.

@Kristyn, thanks for your encouragement! I'm in Leviticus now, and it's a struggle. It's a lot of laws and animal sacrifices. God help you if you were a ram or a goat in Biblical times. I hear Job is really interesting, but I have a LONG way to go before I'm on that book. As far as my manuscript, I have the majority of the first chapter written, so I might post an excerpt from it next week. But honestly, I'm anticipating that it will take a year to bring this thing to fruition.

  8. Job is really, really interesting and I enjoyed studying it! I admit, though, I laughed out loud at the whole "God help you if you were a ram or a goat in Biblical times" thing. Poor animals, what did they do to deserve to be sacrificed? Nothing, but I suppose that's the point, eh?

A year is a totally reasonable time frame to write a book! Dying to see what you've got going!

  9. Jodi, we think so much alike sometimes! I recently decided to attempt reading the entire bible. I also have been working on some ideas for a book. I'm way behind you on both things so lead the way, baby!

I know you will get published. You are so talented! I'm much more of an amateur, but just learning and enjoying the process is exciting for me. If that's all I do, at least I am passionate. For me, that says a lot.

Hey, I'm typing with my left hand only. I had surgery on my right today. I'm doing okay, with not too much pain. I just can't sleep so here I am.

Take care. Good luck with all your adventures!

  10. Whoa Niecy, that was a long comment to accomplish with only one hand! I hope you're healing well after your surgery.

I've attempted to read the entire Bible in the past too, but have always failed. I think what makes this challenge more plausible is the shorter time constraint. It puts you into a bit of a frenzy to get it done. And like the year-challenge, there is a schedule to help keep you on track.

Thanks for the encouragement with my manuscript. And you, too, are a talented writer!

Kristyn, those poor animals did nothing to deserve their fate. :-( There's a lot of brutality in the Old Testament, which is one of the reasons that it is challenging for me to read. I have a feeling I'll be able to soar right through the New Testament, once I get there. Funny, you're the second person this week who has told me, out of the blue, how interesting Job is, so now I'm trying not to cheat and skip to that book. ;-)
